House Committee Votes for 5th Highest Gas Tax in Nation
Reports on gas tax bill favorably
ANNAPOLIS, Md.– Today the House Ways and Means Committee ignored statewide opposition to Governor O’Malley’s proposed gas tax hike and gave a favorable report to enact the 5th highest gas tax rate in the Country. The Committee refused to amend the proposal to ensure that tax dollars generated by drivers are dedicated only towards road projects. The stealth Committee vote was called this afternoon to move the gas tax hike proposal to the full House of Delegates for consideration.
“Drivers will be paying the 5th highest gas tax in the country and they will see more of their gas tax dollars pay for mass transit instead of the road projects they expect.” said AFP Maryland’s State Director Nick Loffer. “This 60 percent gas tax hike is wrong and makes no promises to fulfill the needs of drivers.”
A recent Washington Post poll showed that 72% of Marylanders oppose any gas tax hike. In FY 2013 Drivers contributed nearly half of the moneyinto the Transportation Trust Fund but only received 30% back in funding.
