32 Days a Year This year marks the 100th anniversary of our federal income tax. On Feb 3, 1913, Americans ratified the 16th amendment giving the federal government the power to tax income directly. Since then the tax code has grown to its current complicated and cumbersome state. In 2012, the IRS’s Taxpayer Advocate estimated that Americans spent 6.1 billion hours and $168 billion preparing their taxes. The federal government has a problem curtailing runaway spending and debt. Americans are overtaxed and tired of having their tax burden increased to pay for the out-of-control spending habits of many Members of Congress. I ask that you pursue efforts to control and reduce spending so the overwhelming tax burden on our citizens can be lessened.
