Americans for Prosperity – Maine Chastises Congress for Spendthrift Debt-Limit Deal

October 17, 2013

Augusta – In response to last night’s debt limit deal, AFP – Maine released the following statement:
AFP – ME State Director Carol Weston said, “Spending is the problem. Borrowing more without curbing the spending will continue to hurt jobs and the economy.  In order to take the steps necessary in getting spending and our debt crisis under control we must address the root cause of our rising debt through spending reforms.  There are opportunities for common-sense, reasonable reductions and reforms that will help save billions of tax payer dollars.”
AFP activists have been engaged in a years-long fight to curb wasteful spending. In the past several days alone, tens of thousands of activists across the country have contacted their lawmakers to tell them to stop the overspending.
“AFP has said all along that government spending must be set at levels previously agreed to in the Budget Control Act,” Weston continued. “We’ve also been clear that any increase in the debt limit must be tied to dollar-for-dollar spending cuts. Last night’s debt limit increase accomplishes neither of those. Instead, it allows the government to spend well beyond its means, and increases our borrowing limit without scrutinizing the wasteful spending that is putting us further into debt.”
