AFP Maine Activists Push for Balanced Budget Amendment

July 15, 2011

Grassroots visit Representative Michaud’s district office urging spending cuts

AUGUSTA — AFP Maine joined a massive coalition of conservative organizations yesterday for National District Office Day, visiting Representative Mike Michaud’s (ME-2) district office and urging him to support the Balanced Budget Amendment.

“Families and businesses alike are tightening their belts and making tough choices to make ends meet, while Congress continues to spend inefficiently and as if there are no limits. It is time Washington tighten its belt and balance its budget just like families do every month,” said Maine State Director Carol Weston. “Grassroots activists took this message to Representative Michaud’s district office because it is critical Representative Michaud understand the importance of the Balanced Budget Amendment. It is an essential first step in getting Maine and America back on the path to prosperity.”

Americans for Prosperity has joined a huge coalition of conservative organizations that have pledged not to support a debt limit increase unless we Cut, Cap, and Balance the federal budget. This includes substantial spending cuts that will reduce the deficit next year, enforceable spending caps that will put federal spending on a path to a balanced budget and a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that includes both a spending limitation and a super-majority for raising taxes, in addition to balancing revenues and expenses.
