Asks Congress to let the wasteful wind production incentives expire

Arlington, Va.—Today Americans for Prosperity (AFP), the nation’s premier free market grassroots organization, led a large coalition sending a letter to Capitol Hill opposing the extension of the federal wind production tax credit.  AFP joins a coalition of more than 60 prominent conservative and free-market organizations on the federal, state and local levels, including: National Taxpayers Union, FreedomWorks, Club for Growth, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Council for Citizens Against Government Waste and dozens more.

The letter reads in part: “It is time to end special tax provisions that distort the energy market and increase energy prices. We urge you to let the wasteful wind PTC expire as planned at the end of the year.”

“It is long past time to let the wind production tax credit expire.  It’s been in place for twenty years and the sector is still entirely dependent on the credit and renewable electricity mandates to exist,” said AFP Director of Policy James Valvo.  “It’s time to stop tinkering with the tax code to prop up the government’s favorite industries.”

The principal federal support for wind energy, the production tax credit, is scheduled to expire at the end of 2012.  Before Congress left for August recess, the Senate Finance Committee passed a measure that would renew and dramatically expand several targeted tax credits for renewable energy, including wind power.  According to the Committee, this provision is projected to cost $12.1 billion over ten years.

“Americans deserve an energy policy that is economically viable—not one that needs to be continuously propped up by the tax code,” continued Valvo.  “We’ve seen in practice that wind production incentives fail to produce the sustainable jobs and economic activity they promise.  A huge coalition of groups across the country agrees: it’s time to end this special credit for wind energy.”
