AFP-LA Applaud Release of Man Serving Life in Prison for Three Strikes Law

Oct 22, 2020 by AFP

BATON ROUGE, La.  – Americans for Prosperity – Louisiana (AFP-LA) applauds the Louisiana pardon board for granting parole to Fair Wayne Bryant, a 63-year-old man serving life in prison after stealing hedge clippers in 1997 as a result of his previous felony conviction record for actions influenced by his struggles with alcohol and stimulant dependency.

AFP Community Engagement Director Cameron Westbrook issued the following statement:

“The release of Mr. Fair Wayne Bryant represents yet another move toward a criminal justice system that is in line with American values: one that promotes public safety and offers second chances to people who have made mistakes. The decision reaffirms the conclusions drawn in 2017 through Louisiana’s comprehensive bipartisan criminal justice reform package. Arbitrary standards like three-strike laws and mandatory minimums remove necessary discretion and create unjust incentives for all involved in the process. Mr. Bryant’s release serves as an outstanding reminder of what we’ve known at AFP-LA for a long time; the punishment should fit the crime. We look forward to seeing him make up for time he shouldn’t have lost in the first place as he rejoins his community.”

AFP State Director Matthew Hurtt issued the following statement:

“The outcome of Mr. Bryant’s case highlights that harsh mandatory sentencing laws prevent judges from considering all facets that make up an individual’s life and criminal record. Judges should be empowered to use this information to make a sound judgment on the case that prioritizes public safety and the individual’s best interests. Diversion opportunities such as drug rehabilitation programs have proven to be a more effective, cost efficient alternative to incarceration that would better equip people in circumstances like Mr. Bryant’s with the support they need to turn their lives around. We will continue to support policies that break down the barriers that prevent people from realizing their full potential.”
