School choice programs produce dramatic results for families and children
In states across the U.S., lawmakers are beginning to catch on to the things that the people of Louisiana always knew: parents should be able to choose where to send their child to school. School choice programs produce dramatic results for families and children, using competition and the free market to allow schools to compete and improve the quality of their education, and allowing students to reap the benefits.
In 2011, 42 states introduced legislation to create or expand their voucher or tax credit programs across the U.S. In January 2012, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal took steps to reform Louisianas school choice program, providing greater accountability, transparency, and choice for families.
According to The Heartland Institute, this proposal would introduce the largest voucher program in the nation, impacting 400,000 students, and create a new tax rebate program. Principals would have the authority to hire, evaluate and fire. Students would be given the opportunity to take classes from virtual schools, colleges, and training programs. Students who graduate high school early would be rewarded with a college scholarship. Charter schools would be granted authorization authority to approved nonprofits, universities and community organizations.
Parents and kids should not be trapped in a failing school because of their zip code, income, gender, or color, Jindal said in his announcement. Every child has a right to an excellent education. Thats the promise of America.
Americans for Prosperity Foundation has observed the success due to providing parents and families with choice and we know that this plan increases the opportunities Louisianas children will have to receive a quality education and a bright future.
