- Well-meaning Legislation Presents False Choice -

The Louisiana State House of Representatives has taken the first step toward instituting a state Internet tax. House Bill 569, introduced by Rep. Mack “Bodi” White (R-Denham Springs), would exact a 15-cent per month tax on all consumers in the state that access the Internet. The money would then be funneled into a pot for Attorney General Buddy Caldwell to fight Internet crime, chiefly, pursuing child predators; this is a laudable goal. However, the proposed funding mechanism presents serious problems.

Just wrapped up a terrific Hot Air Tour event in Gonzales, La., right outside of Baton Rouge. Kids were enjoying rides as I left for the airport, after everyone listened to Senator Vitter speak about how outrageous the costs of cap-and-trade will be for Louisiana families, and how important it is to access American energy resources. Sen. Vitter signed the AFP NoClimateTax.com pledge on the spot when I handed it to him--making his commitment in writing to oppose any global warming bill that hides a tax hike.
