Coming up in the House: 'Stop Government Abuse' Week
By Christine Harbin Hanson
Keep an eye on the House of Representatives next week. Before they leave Washington for August recess, members will vote on a package of bills that would rein in the federal government. During “’Stop Government Abuse’ Week,” Representatives will consider legislation dealing with a range of topics, such as federal employee compensation, limiting IRS power, and improving Congressional oversight of costly regulations.
Americans For Prosperity supports several of the bills scheduled for the House floor. Look out for the following 3 pieces of legislation:
- The Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act (REINS), H.R. 367: This legislation will require Congress to approve for federal regulations that cost over $100 million. AFP is a long-time supporter of the REINS act; we re-issued a letter of support for the REINS Act this past January.
- Keep the IRS Off Your Health Care Act, H.R. 2009: This bill would prohibit the IRS from enforcing President Obama’s health care law. AFP issued a letter of support for this legislation earlier this month, and we’re also circulating a petition on the issue.
- Energy Consumers Relief Act, H.R. 1582: This bill would require the EPA to submit a report to Congress on the economic impact of proposed rules whose projected cost exceeds $1 billion. AFP issued a letter of support for this bill as well.
Next week’s roll call votes will be worthwhile to watch. How will your Representative vote? Will he or she stand up to limit government and promote economic freedom? Stay tuned to AFP to learn more.
