AFP Letter of Support for Sen. Cruz's Obamacare Repeal Bill, S. 177
Dear Senator Ted Cruz:
On behalf of more than two million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I am writing in strong support of your bill that would entirely repeal the so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, S. 177.
President Obama’s heath care law is the archetype of the reckless spending coming out of Washington over the last decade. The law is predicted to cost $2.5 trillion during the ten years following its full implementation. The bill also imposes new burdens on employers, such as mandating that businesses with more than 50 full-time workers need to provide affordable health insurance or pay a penalty.
The President’s health care law also includes a number of onerous tax hikes that will damage the economy, many of which are going into effect this year. The 3.8 percent surtax on investment income for high earners, for example, will discourage savings and investment. The new tax on medical devices, equaling 2.3 percent on gross sales, will hit equipment makers and drive the cost of health care even higher. Americans are continuing to struggle in the down economy—now is not the time to impose tax hikes.
A key portion of the President’s health care law, the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB), is particularly concerning. The 15 unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats who sit on this board will have the authority make binding recommendations for controlling the growth in Medicare spending, unless Congress specifically rejects them. In effect, this will put bureaucrats in between patients and their doctors, shifting control of health care decisions away from individuals and their families.
If lawmakers were serious about improving health care and expanding coverage, then they should pursue reforms that embrace market mechanisms. President Obama’s health care law is entirely the wrong approach. Americans for Prosperity is proud to support S. 177 and similar efforts to repeal the health care law. I urge your colleagues to support this important legislation, and I look forward to working with you in the future.
