Americans for Prosperity: Workers Struggling in Obama Economy
ARLINGTON, VA – Today Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips issued the following statement, in response to troubling unemployment numbers released by the Labor Department. The report revealed that the unemployment rate dropped a tenth of a point to 8.1%, but for all the wrong reasons. The labor force participation rate shrank again last month, bringing it to the lowest level since 1981.
“Last month, hundreds of thousands of Americans left the workforce, joining the millions already left unemployed by the Obama economy. While the President is spending millions of dollars on TV ads claiming job growth in ‘green energy,’ the facts prove otherwise. The price of food, gas, education, and healthcare continue to skyrocket while many Americans struggle to find work. The American people are tired of empty rhetoric and empty promises.”
While the Labor Department statistics are disappointing, the shrinking labor force hides the true rate of unemployment. If the US labor force was the same size today as when Obama took office, unemployment would be measured at 11%.
“The answer to our economic woes is not more wasteful government spending. It’s time to re-fuel the free-market, which has always been the true engine of America’s economy.”
