Letter of Support: Nelson-Brown-Quigley Taxpayer Receipt Act, S. 437 and H.R. 1527
Dear Senators Bill Nelson, Scott Brown and Representative Mike Quigley,
On behalf of more than 1.7 million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I write to applaud your introduction of the Taxpayer Receipt Act of 2011, S. 437 and H.R. 1527. The American people are exercising a healthy new scrutiny of how the federal government spends their hard-earned tax dollars. Transparency in government spending is an important part of that scrutiny. Your legislation will offer taxpayers a broad profile of how their money is spent, allowing them a glimpse into spending that their government has never before provided.
It is my understanding that your legislation will not require increased appropriations for the Internal Revenue Service in order to produce these taxpayer receipts. However, if in the final analysis it is shown that the IRS will need more funding, I urge you to find other programs to reduce spending in order to avoid any increase to the already bloated federal deficit. It would be a shame if your good faith effort to clarify government spending became part of the spending problem.
Of course the other side of the spending picture is the massive federal debt that the nation is incurring. Your inclusion of a section regarding federal debt on the taxpayer receipt is an important one. The American taxpayer is going to be responsible for repaying this debt and it important they continue to educate themselves on what those obligations are. Your receipt is an excellent tool toward that end.
Americans for Prosperity is proud to support your legislation, I urge your colleagues to support its passage and I look forward to working with you in the future.
