Budget Shortfall “Solution” Sets Kentucky Up for Failure
FRANKFORT – Julia Crigler, the new State Director of Americans for Prosperity – Kentucky, offered the following statement in response to Governor Beshear’s budget announcement:
“It’s disappointing that Governor Beshear has again chosen to irresponsibly take from the egregiously underfunded rainy day fund that already was far below the 5% recommendation. Continuing to borrow and spend is not an effective means to balance Kentucky’s checkbook now or in the future. Furthermore, the longer Kentucky delays comprehensive tax reform, the worse our revenue situation will grow as our tax code penalizes innovation and growth, diminishing potential tax revenue. The fact of the matter remains that Kentucky’s General Fund has increased in spending by nearly 100% over the last 14 years. We need to grow jobs, not spending.”
“Governor Beshear better hope for a warm winter without heavy snow, because his poor budgeting may not leave him with sufficient funds to salt the roads. Responsible budgeting means making the hard decisions now so you aren’t left in a bind when in really counts. We hope this is the last time Governor Beshear fails to deliver a real balanced budget that doesn’t raid our rainy day fund.”
