Americans for Prosperity-Kansas statement on State of the State Address

January 15, 2014

TOPEKA, KAN. – The Kansas chapter of the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity released the following statement in response to Gov. Sam Brownback’s State of the State Address this evening:

“We have been educating Kansans in recent months on the true cost of education,” said AFP-Kansas state director Jeff Glendening. “We appreciate that tonight Governor Brownback also recognized the total cost of education funding.”

“We also applaud the Governor for recognizing the roles of our different branches of government by pointing out that it is the duty of the legislature, not the courts, to appropriate tax dollars.

“It’s been encouraging to see the efforts to responsibly cut government spending in Kansas last year, and we hope those efforts to rein in government spending will continue in 2014.

“This year our efforts will be focused on reducing the size and scope of state government while increasing its fiscal responsibility.

“In 2014, we look forward to working with our 40,000-plus activists to advance economic freedom in Kansas by promoting free market policies in areas such as energy and healthcare. Repealing the Renewable Portfolio Standard would put a stop to government picking winners and losers in the marketplace, and rather than expanding Medicaid as prescribed by Obamacare, we must focus on enacting reforms that make the program more effective and efficient.

“We look forward to working with legislators and the Governor on these issues and more in the coming months.”
