Pompeo Attacked for Free Market Principles
U.S. Representative Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) is getting attacked for standing up for the free market principles that Kansas voters sent him to Washington to defend. You may have seen that T. Boone Pickens is trying to use out-of-state pressure from Oklahoma to lean on Pompeo. Pickens wants Pompeo to end his opposition to Pickens’ effort to get special tax treatment for natural gas vehicles. But Pompeo has it exactly right; Washington shouldn’t be picking winners and losers in the energy industry.
A bill recently introduced by U.S. Rep. John Sullivan (R-Okla.), H.R. 1380, would establish big tax credits for natural gas vehicle manufactures and purchasers. It would also extend a tax credit for compressed natural gas fuel production and create a new one for infrastructure installation.
For the same reason that AFP opposes tax subsidies for new boutique energy sources, we also object to big tax giveaways for natural gas vehicles. Natural gas is a great energy source, and it may very well be the next fuel to power American vehicles. However, the government shouldn’t be stepping in to pick winners and losers through the tax code. If natural gas vehicles are the future of the American automobile they should prove it in the market.
Tell Rep. Pompeo you appreciate him standing up for free market principles.
Sincerely,
Derrick Sontag
