Americans for Prosperity-Kansas statement on Senate confirmation vote

February 23, 2012

TOPEKA, KAN. – The Kansas chapter of the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) released the following statement in response to today’s Senate vote on Senate Bill 83, regarding judicial selection.

“This bill would simply require that nominees to the Kansas Court of Appeals be subject to Senate confirmation, similar to how our federal court selection process operates,” said AFP-Kansas state director Derrick Sontag. “This change would allow for a more transparent, citizen-based approach to the judicial selection process that is lacking today.

“For years, the members of Americans for Prosperity have supported judicial selection reforms to allow for more public input so the appropriate questions can be asked before a judge is appointed, rather than later.

“Currently Kansas lawyers dominate the selection process, and today the leadership of the Kansas Senate has decided to protect this politically connected group by voting to retain the status quo. It’s unfortunate that such influential policy makers do not believe their constituents should have some input prior to someone being placed on the bench.”
