An article in yesterday’s Topeka Capital-Journal discusses an issue AFP has consistently fought for from the start: transparency in ALL levels of government. Unfortunately, according to the article Kansas is one of only five states that does not post information online about the corporate subsidies it awards.
We realize that transparency may not always be the most popular idea with some in the economic development world, but it’s important to remind those officials the money they are giving away comes from taxpayers. Taxpayers who deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent.
AFP has been fighting corporate welfare for years — we don’t believe government should be in the business of picking winners and losers. Rather than allowing bureaucrats to continue doling out incentives to businesses to come here, why not lower the regulatory burden on job creators? Why not lower the tax burden for all?
Let’s make Kansas a good place to do business and create jobs for everyone, not just a select few.
