Budget & Spending

Government at all levels is too expensive.  Spending is the real cost of government because every dollar they spend is removed from the private economy through taxation, borrowing or inflation.  Large and expensive government...

Tax Reform Sweeps the States

February 12, 2013 J

By Casey Given American workers were shocked to see their paycheck last month, with the federal payroll tax rising to its previous rate of 6.2%. Just when income-earners could have used relief to survive these tough economic times, Washington leaves them with less to support themselves and their families. This negative effect of taxation ripples [...]

Economic Intervention and Obama’s Second Term

February 12, 2013 J,

By Jason Hughey In 2008, President Obama promised us “hope and change.”  He proceeded to intervene in the economy in ways remarkably similar to past presidents.  Now, in 2013, President Obama promises to move us “forward” with more drastic and flawed interventions. To put it simply, by taking up the mantle of economic intervention, President [...]

The President’s Lip Service

February 08, 2013 J,

President Obama is misguided and disingenuous with his plan to reduce the deficit. During a recent interview, he told the American people that there is “no doubt” that the government needs more revenue to reduce the deficit. The President very carefully avoided talking about where this new revenue might come from and instead vaguely suggested that it may come from eliminating unspecified tax “loopholes and deductions.” Obama likes to pay lip service to reducing the deficit, but has yet to do or propose any meaningful action that would accomplish that goal. He has offered no specifics on where the government would get this money, he already raised taxes in the fiscal cliff bill, and his premise is flat out wrong–the only way to meaningfully reduce the deficit is to cut spending.

The Hospital Lobby’s Very Good Deal

February 07, 2013 J

The hospital lobby is out in force urging states to expand their Medicaid programs. Their faulty claims are spurring Republicans governors to embrace the giant expansion of the broken, costly Medicaid program. This week, Governor Kasich of Ohio and Governor Snyder of Michigan became the fifth and sixth Republican governors to announce their desires to further embrace consolidated federal health care through the expansion. But why would hospitals who are focused on delivering high-quality health care to their patients embrace such a bad idea? The answer: Protecting their bottom-line.

Myths from D.C. Part 6 – “Sequestration is a drastic spending cut.”

February 06, 2013 J

By Jason Hughey In 2011, Congress passed the Budget Control Act (BCA).  This legislation raised the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion and only one and a half years later, the federal government has already spent all of that $2.4 trillion and more. The legislation also included some “spending cuts” according to many commentators on the [...]
