May 6&7: Spending Accountability Tour

May 08, 2013

On Monday, I ate lunch with a crowd of conservatives in West Des Moines. With 17 people in attendance, our discussion managed to cover a wide range of topics from the gas tax to education reform. Towards the end of the meal, the conversation started turning until we arrived at a great question; what are we going to do about it? My explanation of what I believe needs to happen was pretty simple.

First, I believe that conservatives have to move beyond the election cycle mentality. That’s not to say that elections don’t have consequences, but if we don’t maintain contact with our elected officials and remind them that we are paying attention, they are far more likely to listen to the lobbyists and liberal advocates.

The second thing we must do is defend the value of the free market. This isn’t difficult because history is on our side. As Ronald Reagan put it, “ There stands before the entire world one great and inescapable conclusion: Freedom leads to prosperity. Freedom is the victor.”

Tuesday was another great day on the road with two events in Cedar Falls. The number one concern in Cedar Falls was Bruce Braley. As his constituents, they understand the threat that he poses to the next generation of Americans that will inherit the legacy of his big spending policies in the form of an ever growing national debt. Congressman Bruce Braley, like many others, will have a lot of explaining to do across the state of Iowa as the “Affordable Care Act” that he championed collapses under its own bureaucratic mass.

Tuesday was a long day, but I am excited about the network or free market conservatives that we are finding on our Spending Accountability Tour.
