AFP-Indiana Stands with Grassroots Activists on Common Core

January 17, 2013

Statehouse- Indiana’s chapter of Americans for Prosperity stood elbow to elbow with nearly 300 grassroots activists to rally in support of Senate Bill 193, which would withdraw Indiana from the continued adoption of the national Common Core standards. The Common Core State Standards Initiative was created in 2009 in the wake of the failed results of No Child Left Behind.

The rally, organized completely on a grassroots level, was held before a hearing of the Indiana Senate Education Committee and featured Hoosiers from all walks of life uniting to voice their support of the bill.

Testifying in front of the Senate Education Committee, AFP-Indiana State Director Chase Downham said, “There are real concerns that Indiana is heading down a path of even more federal involvement in our schools because of Common Core. Our organization has the position that education policy is best left as a local and state issue.”

One of the many concerns about the Common Core State Standards Initiative is the demand for national uniformity in the implementation of Common Core, which results in the loss of local control of education.

“We urge the committee to pass Senate Bill 193 and stop the implementation of Common Core. Let’s take a step back, and as a state determine what standards will best meet the needs of Hoosier children.” Downham said, as he closed his argument.

The Senate Education Committee was not expected to take a vote on SB 193 today.

Americans for Prosperity-Indiana is a statewide non-profit grassroots organization. With over 40,000 members, AFP-Indiana is committed to advocating and promoting limited government, tax reform, and economic freedom.
