Taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief; the Legislature's adjourned

June 12, 2014

Taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief; the Legislature’s adjourned. For months, there existed a constantly-looming threat of new taxes and the uncertainty of whether promised tax relief, in the form of the expiration of the temporary income tax hike, would be allowed.

The Legislature adopted a budget that utilizes fuzzy government math & gimmicks, likely setting the stage for a budgetary showdown in the future.  But rest assured that AFP-IL remains committed to doing it’s part to continually advocate for your economic freedom.
Many various tax hikes were proposed and considered during the legislative session.  Everything from a tax on soda pop and sneakers to a constitutional amendment to scrap our flat state income tax and implement a graduated, or “progressive,” one.
Thankfully, all of these, along with the so-called “Millionaires’ Tax” and, to the surprise of many, the effort to make permanent the temporary income tax hike, failed.  These substantial victories in the Land of Lincoln, where things are usually done quickly and quietly to the detriment of the taxpayers.
Your state income tax bill will drop by 25% next year, returning $688 to the average taxpayer.  We will continue to work to create an environment/culture of greater economic freedom in this state, thereby restoring Illinois to its rightful place as the economic engine of the Midwest.  We should not stand for the bad public policy which has resulted in an unemployment rate worse than not only the national average, but worse than that of Michigan.  We will continue to fight to insure that the ground that’s been gained is not short-lived, but we’ll need your help.  I hope you’ll be willing to join us again in the future to continually promote economic freedom and well-being in our great state.
