Progressive Tax Town Hall Turnouts O’Fallon
O’Fallon, IL – Over 70 people filled the O’Fallon Public Safety Building Community room for a Town Hall meeting to discuss the recent effort in the Illinois Legislature to change our Constitution to impose a “progressive income tax.”
State Senator Kyle McCarter, State Representative Charlie Meier, and AFP – IL staff explained the issue, discussed how it would impact Illinois families and businesses, answered questions from the audience, and described what audience members can do to organize a grassroots effort oppose the progressive income tax.
If the progressive income tax is made law, it will raise taxes on every family earning over $5,000 per year resulting in an increase for 85% of Illinois residents.
“The adoption of a progressive income tax will destroy job creation, push businesses to more economically friendly neighboring states, and put an unnecessary additional tax burden on Illinois families. Neighboring states like Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa make great strides in the way of economic growth, Illinois continues to follow the path of taxing and spending” David From, Illinois State Director, Americans for Prosperity.
Currently, all House and Senate Republicans and one House Democrat are on record opposing the adoption of a progressive income tax. If all of them stay true to their commitment, the pro-tax forces cannot reach the required 3/5 majority in the House and the proposal will be defeated. The purpose of these town hall meetings is to provide information to activists throughout the state and encourage them to contact key House Democrats and urge them to also oppose this disastrous, job-killing proposal.
