AFP-ILLINOIS ESCALATES CAMPAIGN TO OPPOSE PROGRESSIVE INCOME TAX

Launches Ads in Six House Districts Urging Preservation of Flat Tax Rate

Naperville – The Illinois chapter of Americans for Prosperity announced it is launching ads in six legislative districts throughout the state as part of the next phase of its campaign to oppose the imposition of a progressive income tax rate in Illinois.

“Illinois’ political leaders have instituted policies that have led to historic debt, higher taxes and some of the worst unemployment in the nation,” said David From, Illinois State Director for Americans for Prosperity. “Employers and workers are leaving Illinois, limiting residents’ opportunities to succeed, yet state Democratic leaders want to scrap the flat tax and impose a progressive tax to further penalize job-creators and make the Land of Lincoln even less attractive to businesses. These ads are the next phase in AFP’s efforts to inform Illinoisans about this disastrous plan and urge them to tell their legislators they do not want their income taxes raised, again.”

Current legislation in both the Illinois House and Senate would place an amendment on the November ballot to eliminate the current flat income tax rate in the Illinois Constitution and replace it with a graduated rate on all personal and corporate income. As of today, there are 38 Democrat sponsors of the House amendment and 26 Democrat sponsors of the Senate amendment.  There are also 46 co-sponsors of HR 241, a bipartisan resolution expressing opposition to the progressive income tax, and 19 co-sponsors of a companion resolution in the Senate, SR 383.

“Governor Quinn and the Democratic leaders of the Illinois General Assembly hiked taxes by 67% in 2011, promising to pay down overdue bills and get state finances in order.  Yet, the state’s fiscal condition is worse and now they want to hike taxes again under the guise of ‘taxing the rich’.  In fact, the proposed progressive tax plans would likely keep taxes higher for the vast majority of Illinoisans and further damage the state’s business climate, driving even more jobs to other states.”

AFP- Illinois ran cable TV, radio and online ads, in addition to extensive grassroots activities during the spring legislative session to educate legislators and residents about the dangers of the progressive income tax.  This new group of ads will initially run online in six legislative districts in Southern Illinois, Kankakee, Kane County, DuPage County, Will County, Northwest Cook County and Lake County.  The ad campaign will expand to additional legislative districts in coming months.

To further educate taxpayers, AFP-Illinois will host a tele-townhall meeting at 7pm on Monday evening featuring Sen. Michael Connelly (R-Naperville), Todd Maisch, Executive Vice-President of the IL Chamber of Commerce and AFP-IL staff.  Members of the media are welcome to listen in on the forum.  To obtain call-in information, please e-mail Andrew Nelms at anelms@afphq.org.
