Eric Cantor gutsy or 'gutless' on debt talk walk-out

June 24, 2011 J

Phil Kerpen
Vice president for policy, Americans for Prosperity :
Cantor’s decision to walk away from the talks strengthened Boehner’s hand by exposing that the Democrats’ key objective was to trick Republicans into supporting tax hikes. Boehner should now join with the broad alliance of fiscal and social conservatives who have unified behind the Cut, Cap, and Balance approach and, negotiating directly with the president, make clear that Republicans will not support any new federal debt without major year-one cuts, a statutory cap on spending, and a real balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution that includes firm tax and spending limitations.
