Recent negotiations between the state, environmental groups and representatives of the oil and gas industry have yielded a tentative compromise on regulations agreeable to all those involved. According to a recent article in the Huffington Post, “if approved by lawmakers, participants say, the rules would be the nation’s strictest.” And yet, just yesterday, Speaker Michael Madigan supported the idea of imposing a moratorium. This is a clear political move, but to ensure it doesn’t stop good policy, we need your help!
Fracking is a process whereby water is combined with sand and chemicals and pumped up to 10,000 feet below the surface to extract oil and natural gas. Because of the New Albany shale gas formation which lies beneath portions of southern Illinois, our state is rapidly becoming an attractive to those who wish to begin exploratory drilling.
Exploration of this deposit could lead to anywhere from a few thousand new jobs to upwards of 40,000. This method is certainly not new to Illinois. As a senior geologist at the Illinois State Geological Survey noted, “we’ve certainly fracked oil wells for the last 60 years in Illinois.”
Contact your legislator today to encourage them to oppose any job-killing moratorium and support this commonsense approach to an expanding industry which will create much-needed jobs here in Illinois.
