AFP – Illinois Activists Honored as “Activists of the Year”

September 04, 2013

Orlando, FL – Americans for Prosperity – Illinois activists Robert & Tempie Lyons of O’Fallon, Illinois were honored at the 7th Annual Defending the American Dream Summit with the organization’s “Activists of the Year” award.

Robert and Tempie were honored because of their outstanding dedication to halting state and local tax increases.  The Lyonses opened their home to serve as a downstate basecamp for AFP – Illinois staff and volunteers.

The Lyonses hosted numerous phone banks to fight against the O’Fallon District 90 school referendum tax increase, thus helping insure the proposal’s overwhelming defeat by a margin of nearly two-to-one!  This victory for local taxpayers kept millions of dollars out of the hands of government.  Not only did Robert & Tempie host the events, but they also were on the phones night in and night out calling residents and encouraging them not to support higher taxes.

Later, as a part of the ongoing fight against the push to switch the state from a flat income tax to a progressive one, the Lyonses opened their home once again to host AFP – Illinois activists to contact citizens throughout the state to oppose a proposal which would amount to a tax hike on 85% of Illinois residents.  As before, the Robert & Tempie were on the telephones each and every night.  With the help of the Lyons family and volunteers throughout the state, AFP-Illinois hopes to spare the citizens of Illinois from yet another tax increase.

“Bob and Tempie exemplify the commitment and dedication we need to turn Illinois from bad, big government policies to pro-growth policies.  Their hard-work and selflessness is inspiring to our Illinois chapter and to AFP activists throughout the nation” David From, State Director, Americans for Prosperity – Illinois.

The tremendous pulse the Lyons family has on their community has also made a big impact for AFP – Illinois.  They consistently keep AFP – Illinois staff updated on upcoming issues in their community.  The Lyons family has introduced AFP staff to contacts throughout the community who champion economic freedom.  These introductions have led to more AFP – Illinois volunteers to champion our legislative priorities, attend our events, and engage others in their community.
