AFP Letter Supporting SR 415 - Cap GA Income Tax Rates
February 24, 2014
Dear Georgia Senator:
On behalf of more than 55,000 Americans for Prosperity Georgia activists around the State, I write in strong support of SR 415 concerning placing a prohibition on raising the state income tax beyond the rate established at the time the resolution becomes law. SR 415 will prohibit the authorization of any new state income taxes.
Currently, Georgia’s state income tax stands at 6 percent for the highest income bracket. By comparison, several of the states that border Georgia are already far more competitive on these fronts. Florida and Tennessee have no state income tax and Alabama’s top rate is 4.02 percent. Despite the competitive regional advantage that these states have, they can adjust their rates up or introduce a new rate any time.
Income taxes are a driving factor in attracting and keeping a quality workforce and in business development within a state. While Georgia is moving in the right direction regarding the development of a strong environment for businesses to thrive, we clearly have work to be done. The non partisan Tax Foundation gives Georgia a 2014 individual income tax ranking of 41 out of the 50 states. And while the American Legislative Exchange Council gives Georgia an overall economic outlook ranking of 10 out of 50, they rate our top marginal income tax rate at 26.
Americans for Prosperity Georgia is proud to support SR 415 as a good step in the right direction. A cap on Georgia’s income tax rates will provide more stability to taxpayers in our state and give us a stronger basis on which to stand relative to our neighbors. I urge you to support its passage to allow Georgia taxpayers the opportunity to vote on it on the November ballot and I look forward to working with you in the future.
