New England Political Journal: Romano: Are we residents or revenue sources to politicians in Hartford?
It’s budget time in Hartford which can only mean one thing – the clamoring for more revenue has begun.
Connecticut taxpayers struggle under one of the heaviest tax burdens in the country and yet it is never enough. Irrespective of the fact that Connecticut taxpayers have the latest tax freedom day in the country, which means we work the longest to pay off all of our local, state and federal taxes, it is never enough. Despite tax laws and regulatory burdens that are literally driving residents and businesses out of the state, it is never enough. There remains a call for more revenue.
And therein lies the fundamental question – are we residents or are we revenue sources?
Americans for Prosperity Connecticut is clear in answering this question. We think the hard-working families of Connecticut are residents; residents who are overburdened and weary of being treated by state government as revenue sources.
Unfortunately, the elected officials who espouse and support higher taxes to generate more revenue fail to see that what they’re spending is costing the average Connecticut family. They may justify it by saying, “we created jobs.”
If increased government spending was capable of creating jobs, then after all the spending Governor Malloy set forth, why did Connecticut lose more labor than any other state? Why has unemployment remain virtually unchanged?
Elected officials also like to claim that cutting spending would hurt the poor. The truth is as government spending in Connecticut has grown so has the income disparity.
The city of New Britain is estimating raising $1.8 million off of an ordnance charging residents for “nuisance” 911 calls; there is proposed legislation that would tax business savings accounts cleverly coined “the hoarders tax.”
As the budget fights continue it is our responsibility to remind our elected officials that we are residents of the state by choice. Our obligation is to our families first, we do not exist and do not work simply to fuel their agendas. Take a stand with AFP CT and declare you are no longer a revenue source.
