AFP Reacts to Debt Ceiling Deal

October 17, 2013

HARTFORD — The Connecticut chapter of Americans for Prosperity, the nation’s foremost grassroots, free-market organization, released a statement following the passage of a debt ceiling deal through the House and Senate.
Connecticut State Director JR Romano said:
“AFP has said all along that government spending must be set at levels previously agreed to in the Budget Control Act in order to ensure the wasteful spending that is putting us deeper into debt is given the proper scrutiny.  We’ve also been clear that any increase in the debt limit should be tied to dollar-for-dollar spending cuts. This latest Senate deal accomplishes neither of those. It should come as a surprise to no one that Washington has a spending problem and that too many Washington politicians are poor stewards of our tax dollars.  Allowing government to continue to spend beyond its means and drive up further into debt is not a solution.”
AFP activists have been engaged in a years-long fight to get policymakers to curb dangerous overspending. In the past several days alone, tens of thousands of activists across Connecticut and the nation have contacted their lawmakers to tell them to stop overspending.
AFP has advocated for setting spending levels at those previously established under the Budget Control Act, and for tying any increase in the debt ceiling to dollar-for-dollar spending cuts in order to rein in Washington’s continued overspending.
