AFP-CT Enters Day 4 of Countdown to Tax Freedom Day

May 09, 2013

HARTFORD, Conn. — Americans for Prosperity-Connecticut is continuing their countdown to Tax Freedom Day today by highlighting the state’s ranking as the Worst State to Retire In by TopRetirements.com. According to the Tax Foundation, this year’s Tax Freedom Day for Connecticut is May 13, the latest in the country and eight days later than in 2012. Americans for Prosperity-Connecticut is carrying out a petition drive to let elected officials in Hartford know the state’s taxpayers are tired of being treated like revenue sources.

“According to TopRetirements.com, Connecticut is the worst state to retire in,” said JR Romano, Americans for Prosperity-Connecticut State Director. “Thanks to Governor Malloy, anyone planning to retire in the Nutmeg State in the future has little to look forward to. Governor Malloy’s projected budget moves around debt while driving up the deficit, all leading to an almost inevitable increase in our already heavy tax burden.”

John Brady, the president of TopRetirements.com, cited the state’s property taxes, personal income taxes, and cost of living as contributing factors to the ranking.

“We cannot continue to tax and spend our way into last place and wonder why people are fleeing the state,” continued Romano. “We must stop over-spending now, stop treating residents like revenue sources and work to create an environment that people want to do business in, raise their families in and eventually retire in.”
