“Spending Pause Santa Claus” Visits Lawmakers this Week
Americans for Prosperity’s Spending Pause Santa Claus will be paying personal visits to congressional offices in Colorado this week — a pink piggy bank gift in hand — as a way of reminding lawmakers of both parties that these hard economic times demand that any fiscal cliff sacrifices me made by big spenders in Washington, not average Americans struggling to provide families with a happy holiday season.
“Just like Santa Claus, AFP-Colorado is making a list and checking it twice,” said AFP State Director Jeff Crank. “And we’ll be judging who’s ‘naughty’ or ‘nice’ in Colorado’s congressional delegation based on where they think the burden of fixing the fiscal cliff should fall, on the spenders in Washington or on the taxpayers here in Colorado.” Cranks says he hopes a district office visit from the Spending Pause Santa Claus will remind lawmakers that their first obligation is the protect taxpayers, not Washington spending interests.
The piggy bank gift is meant to underscore the fact that this isn’t necessary a happy holiday season for many Americans, who are scraping together nickels and dimes, and raiding the piggy bank, in order to make ends meet. Washington, on the other hand, continues to spend and borrow at record-breaking levels, apparently oblivious to the burdens this is placing on average Americans.
AFP believes too much spending, not too little taxing, is the problem Washington’s “fiscal cliff” negotiators should be addressing. But the group thus-far has seen little evidence that significant spending reduction are on the table.
