Putting ObamaCare Enrollment Numbers in Context

February 13, 2014

Americans for Prosperity-Colorado State Director Dustin Zvonek released the following statement today in response to the latest Obamacare enrollment numbers from the government:

“The latest Obamacare enrollment numbers, if we take them at face value, look far less impressive when you consider that signing-up for this program isn’t really a free choice, but a government mandate, backed by coercion, bribery, in the form of subsidies, and massive taxpayer-funded marketing campaigns. How many Americans would have enrolled if it were a matter of choice, rather than a panicked response to getting dumped by their existing insurer, as part of the cruel “deal” cut between this White House and the industry? All this number proves is that you can pressure 3.3 million scared and cornered people into doing almost anything, including paying more for substandard, government-approved care, when that’s the only option they have. Understood in that context, this is another embarrassingly-poor showing for the daily disaster called Obamacare.”

Zvonek make these additional points in an effort to put the numbers in context.

  • This administration has a record of inflating and conflating such numbers to advance a self-serving political agenda, so it’s important to approach these with caution;
  • Millions of dollars and months of taxpayers-funded Obamacare marketing  has made virtually no impact on attracting young people to enroll, who the administration is relying on to pay the bulk of the costs to offset the older, sicker population;
  • Enrollments are still well below where the administration said they needed to be — and nearly 80 percent of those currently enrolled require subsidies.
