The conservative Americans for Prosperity, which calls itself “the nation’s largest grassroots free market group,” will use the liberal bastion of San Francisco as a stage Thursday — for the launch of a national campaign against Obamacare, organizers say.
AFP, aiming to push the message that “big insurance” — not taxpayers — will be the big beneficiaries of Obamacare, will kick off its event at 10:45 a.m. in front of Blue Shield headquarters in San Francisco.
The effort comes as the White House and Democratic backers are pushing ads and messaging that aim to educate voters to the benefits of the landmark health care reform bill.
AFP organizers say their press conference will target Enroll America — which they claim is run by big insurance companies and has “ties” to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
Enroll America describes itself as a nonpartisan 501(C)(3) organization with a mission “to maximize the number of uninsured Americans who enroll in health care coverage made available by the Affordable Care Act,” otherwise known as Obamacare.
Here’s excerpts from the release from Jennifer Kerns, spokeswoman for AFP:
SAN FRANCISCO- The California chapter of Americans for Prosperity – the nation’s largest grassroots free market organization – is slamming Enroll America for benefiting special interest groups, especially big insurance. It’s just another example of Big Business hopping into bed with Big Government at the expense of taxpayers.
Recently, the government watchdog group, Cause of Action, asked the IRS to withdraw the tax exempt status of Enroll America….(whose stakeholders) are the very corporations whose bottom lines will directly benefit from more people being signed onto ObamaCare.
“It is outrageous and deeply troubling that major American corporations would receive tax deductions to fund a non-profit organization which then turns around and recruits new business, literally signs up the new customers, for that same corporation all at the public’s expense. This is the epitome of corporate welfare and political cronyism,” said AFP California Director David Spady.
“Big insurance companies should not be profiting from a law that hurts the economy, destroys jobs, and undermines taxpayers,” said Alex Alifeira, Executive Director of the Contra Costa County Taxpayers Association. “Government agents climbing into bed with “big insurance” to help a trillion-dollar industry profit, meanwhile forcing people to buy a private company’s product they may neither want nor need, smacks of impropriety.”
Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a nationwide organization of citizen-leaders committed to advancing every individual’s right to economic freedom and opportunity. AFP believes reducing the size and intrusiveness of government is the best way to promote individual productivity and prosperity for all Americans.
We couldn’t reach a spokesperson for Enroll America on Wednesday night for their response, but we will post and update.
