AFP Supports Johnson-Upton “Keep Your Health Plan” Legislation

November 05, 2013

Dear Representative Upton and Senator Johnson:

On behalf of more than two million Americans for Prosperity activists in all 50 states, I applaud you for introducing legislation to protect continuous health insurance coverage for individuals under the President’s health care law. Your aptly-titled bills, the “If You Like Your Health Plan, You Can Keep it Act” and the ‘‘Keep Your Health Plan Act of 2013,” will allow grandfathered health insurance plans.

Ever since he began promoting his health care plan in 2009, President Obama has repeatedly claimed that individuals who are satisfied with their health insurance plans would be able to keep them. With implementation underway, we see that this did not turn out to be true: Over two million people nationally have had their coverage dropped because of the onerous requirements of the President’s healthcare law. Blue Cross and Blue Shield have cancelled 300,000 policies in Florida alone; meanwhile, 280,000 Californians have seen their coverage disappear. Every day, more Americans receive letters from their health insurance providers informing them that they may not keep their health care plan.

Your legislation addresses this broken promise from President Obama by allowing insurance plans currently available on the individual market to continue in the future. It will also protect Americans that keep their health care plans from penalties under his health care law.

Coupled with the catastrophic rollout of the health insurance exchange websites, the fact that millions of Americans are being jettisoned off their current healthcare plan reveals the serious flaws in the health care law. Americans for Prosperity is proud to support your legislation to correct President Obama’s broken promise by ensuring continuous health care coverage to individuals currently in the market. I urge your colleagues to support their passage, and I look forward to working with you in the future.
