During his 2008 campaign, President Obama promised, “if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can — it’s just that it will bankrupt them.” It’s now 2012, and here’s how he’s doing it.
The EPA’s new Utility MACT regulation has the stated purpose of reducing mercury emissions at power plants, but there is no credible evidence that this is even a real public health problem. The actual goal here is to crush coal- and oil-fired plants under the weight of costly new mandates. As these plants close or pass the high cost of the new regulations along to consumers, electricity prices are expected to rise by as much as 24% and the American economy will lose well over a million jobs.
Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe has introduced an official resolution (<a href=”http://americansforprosperity.org/legislativealerts/022412-letter-support-senator-inhofes-cra-disapproval-epas-utility-mact-regulations/”>S.J.Res. 37</a>) to rein in these out-of-control regulators and overturn the most costly rule in American history.
