Congratulations to Jose Borrajero!
The Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity Foundation has named José Borrajero as its 2012 Grassroots Activist of the Year. José is a leader of the Rapid Response Team, which is part of the Arizona 2012 Project and the Arizona Freedom Alliance. The Rapid Response Team uses social media to quickly organize grassroots support for tea party legislation moving through the Arizona Legislature.
In his work with the Rapid Response Team, José has greatly supplemented the efforts of AFP-Arizona to advance (and sometimes pass!) pro-taxpayer, pro-consumer and pro-producer legislation — including HB 2826, a bill sponsored by Rep. Michelle Ugenti (R-Scottsdale) and passed during the 2012 regular legislative session. HB 2826 consolidates local elections in November of even-numbered years, thus promoting higher turnout and greater input by taxpayers, curbing the dominance of spending interests in local politics, and saving municipalities money in the administration of elections.
The success of the Rapid Response Team is due to both speed and clear messaging, which ensure that highly motivated Arizona activists know where bills are in the legislative process and how they can make a timely impact. A true “team player,” Jose has worked well with many members of the tea party coalition, including the Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity — and he is quick to credit the many other activists who make his email alerts and web posts possible. José’s efforts with the Rapid Response Team embody the hardworking spirit of the 2012 Project, which prides itself on being “The Tea Party’s A-Team” and likes to be known for “getting it done.” Although the group meets weekly, the purpose of every meeting is concrete action.
José also has an amazing and moving personal story, having fled Communist Cuba in 1961, when he was 15 years old. Western Free Press has a great video interview with José, describing life under socialism in Castro’s Cuba.
José also serves as the communications director of the Arizona Latino Republican Association, and helped to host ALRA’s weekly two-hour talk radio show on 960 AM KKNT.
