AZ Legislative Action Alert -- Week of February 10-14

February 07, 2014 J,

AZ ACTION ALERT — Week of February 10-14

This coming week (beginning February 10), two (and possibly three) of Americans for Prosperity-Arizona’s key bills will be in committee. And we have one other important reform that needs action. Please use the information and links below to take action on these FOUR issues TODAY.

HB 2291: Empowerment Scholarship Account Expansion

This bill, sponsored by Rep. Debbie Lesko, will be heard before the House Ways and Means Committee on MONDAY (Feb 10) at 2:00 pm. HB 2291 would expand the eligibility of Arizona’s system of Educational Savings Accounts, also known as Empowerment Scholarship Accounts, to include the children of police officers, firefighters or other first responders employed by public agencies, and children who are the siblings of current or previous ESA recipients. Beginning in the 2016-17 school year, eligibility would be expanded to include children who meet the economic eligibility requirements for free or reduced price lunches, and beginning in the 2017-18 school year, to include children whose family income exceeds the economic eligibility requirements for free or reduced price lunches by up to 15 percent.

We need to provide Arizona children with an opportunity to improve their education, so please take the following action steps:

1) Click HERE to call or email the members of the House Ways and Means
Committee, and ask them to support HB 2291, the ESA expansion bill.

2) Click HERE to email the legislators in your district, and ask them to support HB 2291, the ESA Expansion bill, when it comes to a floor vote.

HB 2174: AZ ObamaCare Penalty Tax Deduction

HB 2174, a bill sponsored by Rep. Adam Kwasman, will be heard before the House Ways and Means Committee on MONDAY (Feb 10) at 2:00 pm. HB 2174 will help to protect Arizona health care consumers and taxpayers who decide that it isn’t in their best interest to sign up for ObamaCare. HB 2174 will include in the list of Arizona income tax deductions the amount paid as a federal tax penalty for not purchasing ObamaCare-approved health insurance. So please take the following action steps:

1) Click HERE to call or email the members of the House Ways and Means Committee, and ask them to support HB 2174, to protect AZ taxpayers from the ObamaCare tax penalty.

2) Click HERE to email the legislators in your district, and ask them to support HB 2174 when it comes to a floor vote and to protect AZ taxpayers from the ObamaCare tax penalty.

HCR 2005: Terminal Patients Compassionate Care Act (Again!)

HCR 2005, sponsored by Rep. Phil Lovas, would put the Terminal Patients Compassionate Care Act on the 2014 election ballot. It is likely to be heard in the House Reform and Human Services Committee on THURSDAY (Feb 13). If approved by the voters, the reform would allow drug manufacturers to provide investigational drugs, products, or devices to terminally ill patients. No individual should be denied the right to save his or her own life — so please so please take the following action steps:

1) Click HERE to call or email the members of the House Reform and Human Services Committee, and continue asking them to support HCR 2005 when it gets to their committee.

2) Click HERE to email the legislators in your district, and ask them to support HCR 2005 when it comes to a floor vote and to support the terminally ill patients’ right to save their own lives!

SB 1354 and SB 1355 — Government Employee Paycheck Protection

SB 1354 and SB 1355, sponsored by Sens. Gail Griffin and Kelli Ward, would prohibit government employers from deducting any third party payment — including union political action funds — from an employee’s paycheck unless that employee regularly provides advance express written or electronic authorization. They have been assigned to the Senate Government and Environment Committee, but haven’t been placed on an agenda yet.

We need to protect Arizona workers’ paychecks, so please take the following action steps:

1) Click HERE to call or email the members of the Senate Government and Environment Committee and tell them to support these bills when they come for a vote.

2) Click HERE to email the legislators in your district, and ask them to support SB 1354 and SB 1355 when they come to the floor.

AND… Here are even more ways to take action:

1) Register in support of the bills. If you do not already have an account with the ALIS system, you will need to come down to the Capitol to set up an account at one of the several kiosks (after you sign up, you will be able to voice your opinion on bills from the comfort of your home). For help getting set up with an ALIS account, contact Bill Fathauer at bfathauer@afphq.org. A member of our legislative team will also be there in advance of the hearing to help anyone who needs to sign in.

2) Attend the committee hearings and testify in support of the bills. If you or someone you know has been personally affected by an issue being raised in committee, you can attend the hearing in person and tell your story. Requesting to speak also requires setting up an ALIS account in person if you do not already have one (see #1 above), but after that it is very easy to request to speak at any time from your home computer or a mobile device.

3) Spread the word! After you’re done lobbying your legislators yourselves, please forward this email onto your friends and family — or anyone else you know — and show them how they can be a part of the process. Every new voice helps!

Thank you for all you do to help win free-market victories for the people of Arizona. I hope you’ll continue to stand with us going forward! To take action on other important state and federal bills, go to our main ACTION PAGE. To read AFP-Arizona’s full policy agenda for 2014, click HERE.
