Tucson Medicaid Expansion Debate, March 7

March 04, 2013

To all Pima County Taxpayers and Health Care Consumers:

Late-breaking news:  Gov. Jan Brewer’s office has agreed to send at least one state official, Tom Betlach of AHCCCS (and perhaps John Arnold of the Governor’s budget office), to participate in AFP-Arizona’s March 7 discussion/debate on the proposed expansion of Arizona Medicaid (AHCCCS) under ObamaCare/PPACA.

The Medicaid expansion is a huge issue for Arizona.  The Governor’s office, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, and powerful lobbyists from the hospital industry are pushing for Arizona to impose statewide taxes (including a hospital bed tax) by hundreds of millions of dollars per year to fund the expansion.  Seating is limited, but there are still seats available, so please RSVP soon:  EventBrite:

Thursday, March 7, 6:30 to 9:00 pm

(We rearranged our schedule to accommodate Betlach, who will speak in the 6:30 to 7:00 segment, before returning to Phoenix.  The debate will continue until 8:00 pm, when we will begin showing the movie Sick and Sicker, about the Canadian health care system.  The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons is providing several dozen DVDs of Sick and Sicker for activists to take home after the event.)

Where: The Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. (one block east of Country Club)

Panelists for the three debate/discussion segments:

Tom Betlach, Director, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System
(possible: John Arnold, Director, Office of Strategic Planning and Budgeting)
Tom Jenney, Arizona Director, Americans for Prosperity

Frank Antenori, former AZ State Senator and Political Activist
Mystery Democrat, to argue against Antenori and in favor of the expansion
— Reps. Steve Farley (D) and Ethan Orr (R) could not attend

John Newport, PhD, TucsonCitizen.com Columnist
