August Was Not an Anomaly – Patients First to Continue Momentum in Health Care Debate

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Patients First bus tour will visit the North Carolina State Fair to encourage North Carolinians to contact their senators about health care reform. People can contact their legislators and can sign the Patients First petition asking lawmakers to keep their hands off our health care.

Some in Washington think Americans’ passion at August town halls was a fluke, but concerned citizens know better. As the details of legislation seep out of Congress, constituents are shocked at the level of government intrusion into health care and the threat of government-forced insurance backed up by fines and possible jail time.

“The rhetoric is not matching up with reality on health care. The promise that ‘if you like what you have, you can keep it’ rings hollow when people see the reality of what Congress is proposing,” said Dallas Woodhouse, North Carolina State Director of Patients First, a Project of Americans for Prosperity. “It’s no wonder Congress is trying to keep the shocking details hidden from the public until the last possible moment. It’s appalling that Americans have to beg their members of Congress to post the details of such a massive overhaul on the Internet so that all can see it.”

Recently, the Congressional Budget Office estimated the Senate Finance Committee’s bill would leave 25 million people uninsured despite its preliminary price tag topping $800 billion. A new study from PricewaterhouseCoopers projects individual Americans’ insurance costs skyrocketing under the legislation being considered in Washington.

Americans for Prosperity's Patients First Bus Tour will bring updates from Washington to people in North Carolina and give them ideas about making their voices heard! The North Carolina leg of the trip continues on Monday, October 19th through Wednesday, October 21st and will urge constituents to speak out on behalf of patients and against a government takeover. Details for the State Fair stop are below.

“Members of congress should not pass a bill that has yet to be printed or posted on the Internet for people to read. The American people know instinctively that there is a better way to do health care reform,” Woodhouse said. “Put patients in charge of their own decisions, expand options for health insurance, and target reforms to those who need help the most.”
