2009 Defending the American Dream Summit

AFPF’s 2009 Defending the American Dream Summit was a tremendous success, with more than 2,100 grassroots activists from across the country pouring into Washington, D.C. for two days of grassroots training and networking. We had a great time getting to know some of our Kansas activists, and we’re sorry more AFP-Kansas members weren’t able to come.
For those of you who weren’t able to attend, C-SPAN recorded much of what occurred during the summit. You can watch their footage here: http://www.c-spanarchives.org/program/289277-1.
The 50-plus Kansans who attended the 2009 Summit had a special chance to view a highlight video showing some of AFP-Kansas’ accomplishments in 2009. To see it yourself, click here.

Kansas Dept. of Transportation Meetings
The Kansas Department of Transportation is conducting a series of meetings to discuss a proposed process for selecting highway projects. With the state of Kansas facing an anticipated budget shortfall of more than $500 million and with traditional sources of funding for transportation plans (such as bond indebtedness and motor fuels taxes) already being stretched to the limit, AFP-Kansas has serious concerns of whether the legislature should fund a multi-year plan instead of simply, providing appropriations for the necessary maintenance of our existing roads and highways.
The meetings will all begin at 1 pm, and at 3 pm questions will be answered about individual projects:
Oct. 13 – Hutchinson, Grand Prairie Hotel ( 1400 North Lorraine Street, Hutchinson)
Oct. 14 – Chanute, KDOT District Office (411 W. 14 th, Chanute)
Oct. 19 – Mission, Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center (6200 Martway, Mission)
Oct. 22 – Dodge City, Dodge House Hotel & Convention Center ( 2408 W. Wyatt Earp Blvd., Dodge City)
Oct. 23 – Wichita, Wichita State University Eugene M. Hughes Metropolitan Complex ( 5015 E. 29th Street North, Wichita)
Oct. 26 – Hays, Fort Hays State University Memorial Union ( 600 Park Street, Hays)
We encourage you to take part in one of these meetings and to feel free to contact us with any questions you should have. You can find additional information in our AFP-Kansas Transportation Policy Primer, which covers the varying discussion topics of this important issue.
