2009 Fall Veto Session Facts

2009 Fall Veto Session kicks into gear October 14-16 and October 28-30 to address some very important issues facing the state.  Governor Quinn has indicated that we will be addressing the following:

  • Funding of College MAP Grants: A $200 million shortfall in college MAP grant tuition funding for the spring semester is threatening thousands of students’ ability to remain in school.
  • Medicaid Funding: There’s an $800 million backlog in state payments to local health care providers under the Medicaid program
  • Campaign Finance Reform: Among the Governor’s vetoes was House Bill 7 which was called a “sham” of campaign finance reform riddled with loopholes.
  • Recall Amendment: The Governor is urging the Senate to pass HJRCA 31 which would place a referendum on the ballot in November 2010 to give the voters of Illinois the ability to recall the governor.

Other pressing issues that may be considered include:

  • Pension Reform: Governor’s Commission is slated to make recommendations.
  • Unemployment: Expanding tax incentives to encourage business growth and to help struggling businesses afford to keep jobs in Illinois
  • Cemetery Oversight: Report the findings of the Cemetery Oversight Task Force to prevent future tragedies like the one uncovered at Burr Oak Cemetery in Cook County
