Dear Congress

The Obama health care plan would be terrible for the American people. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has admitted “we’re going to have some type of public option, call it ‘co-op,’ call it what you want.” If the government co-ops will be so great, Congress and all government employees should be required to use them.

We would go from a system that is arguably the best in the world to one that rations care and dictates choices. Why should the 85 percent of Americans who are insured be penalized to give insurance to illegal immigrants and the 12 million people who can afford insurance but choose not to purchase it?

How can our government expect anyone to get behind this “plan” when there is no consideration of how it will be funded? Businesses and families cannot function in that manner. It would be extremely disingenuous of Congress to vote for this plan for the public, but choose to keep a much better plan for yourselves. Our elected officials exist to represent and serve us; we are not your servants and must not be treated as your inferiors.

How can anyone have faith in a health care system run by the government? This is the same government that has run the social security system into insolvency, Medicare and Medicaid are on the brink of bankruptcy, the federal deficit is now counted in the trillions of dollars, the postal service is poorly run and losing money every day and must cut services to survive. Veterans groups and lawmakers say VA hospitals have permitted many violations because federal regulations allow doctors to work with little outside scrutiny. The VA health system is showing signs of an “institutional breakdown,” in the words of Congressman Phil Roe (R-TN).

The Obama administration recently said Medicare is expected to go broke in 2017, two years sooner than projected last year. The Social Security trust fund will be exhausted in 2037, four years earlier than predicted. There is a lesson to be learned here.

If you choose to vote for the current national health care bill, you will not be representing your people. You must remember you are a servant of the people and not their lord and master. Your benefits should not be superior, but rather should be equal. It is time for you to change. Start representing the people and allow them to choose what they want with free market suppliers and without a government takeover.
